A Waterloo woman said the clerks who checked her ticket shared in the celebration when she won a $50,000 lottery prize Monday.
Lori Niedert said she kept looking at her "Super Crossword" instant-scratch ticket over and over. She finally just decided to take it back in to Kwik Star, 1214 Franklin St. in Waterloo, where she purchased it, to have them verify it.
"They checked it and it was $50,000," Niedert said. "They were hugging me. They were so happy for me."
Niedert, 56, claimed the 15th of 34 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Iowa Lottery's Super Crossword scratch game. She immediately called her husband, Boyd, to share the good news.
"I called him at work and I said, 'You're not going to believe this.' And he goes, 'What?' And I go, 'I just won $50,000!' He goes, 'No way,'" Niedert said. "And I said, 'Yes I did!'"
Niedert then went and picked up Boyd so she could claim her prize that same day at the lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids.
"It couldn't come at a better time. We really needed it," Niedert said, still in shock from the win. "We're just kind of letting it sink in."
Super Crossword is a $5 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in either puzzle or the complete bonus word in the play area on each ticket. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.69.
Nineteen top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Super Crossword, as well as 43 prizes of $5,000 and hundreds of prizes of $500 and $100.
