The Iowa Lottery's "Crossword" instant-scratch game has been very good to a Des Moines man who has now claimed two top prizes of $30,000.
"(I) told the guy that I was going to win big," Wayne Wilson said. "(I) bought three of them, and it was there!"
Wilson, 52, claimed the 70th of 97 top prizes of $30,000 available in the Crossword scratch game. Wilson, no stranger to winning lottery prizes, claimed his first $30,000 top prize in a similar version of the Crossword game last June.
Wilson, who works for Roto-Rooter®, claimed his latest prize Thursday at the lottery's headquarters in Des Moines. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey's, 4151 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines - the same place he regularly buys lottery tickets.
Wilson said he enjoys playing the Crossword game.
"It's better than just a quick scratch and you're done," he said. "It takes just a little bit longer to do it."
The store clerk didn't initially believe him, Wilson said, so he had the clerk scan his winning ticket.
"He couldn't believe it," Wilson said.
Wilson said he has no immediate plans for how he's going to spend his winnings.
Crossword is a $3 scratch game. Players win a prize by uncovering at least three complete words in the ticket's puzzle. If a player uncovers 10 words, he/she wins $30,000. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.82.
Twenty-seven top prizes of $30,000 are still up for grabs in Crossword, as well as 37 prizes of $3,000, 415 prizes of $300 and thousands more prizes of $100.
